Sejong made the alphabet because people could not write — not because they were young. 'Eorida' then meant foolish; 'eoriseokda' still carries that old sense.
The word handed 'foolish' over to 'eoriseokda' and took on 'young' instead. Being young was seen as knowing little. A hundred years ago that changed.
In 1920 Bang Jeong-hwan spread the word 'eorini'. Like 'neulgeuni' and 'jeolmeuni', the suffix '-i' treats someone as a full person. A child is a person too.
An aside: '얼' means spirit. Some read 얼굴 as 'the cave the spirit passes through', 어른 as 'one whose spirit has arrived', 어린이 as 'one who inherited it'. Lovely — but a folk reading, not the dictionary's.
Foolish → young → a word of respect. Words are not neutral: what we call someone decides where they stand. Change the word, change the standing.
