A friend wins a prize. You clap — and your stomach twists a little. Only you? No. Me too, grown-ups too. Every friend-mind has a name, and every one ends in 心: 童心, 競爭心, 猜忌心, 同情心. One rule today: read the last character.
The first friend is a childhood friend — five, six years old. That mind is 童心, the mind of a child: no winning, no losing. Did you ever count who was better? No. Digging in the same sandbox — that was a friend. Then school starts, and one more mind appears.
競爭心 — the mind to beat someone. Sounds bad. Should we get rid of it? No. Look at 競: the old gloss reads it as two people standing side by side — not back to back. Think of a track. You run in the next lane. Ever run alone? Your time gets worse. Someone beside you makes your legs faster. So 競爭心 is not beating a friend — it is running beside one.
While running you keep glancing sideways. A friend pulls ahead — it stings. That is 猜忌心, envy. Does it make you bad? No. Everyone has it, me too. The one who never envies is the one who never runs. Parents: a child who envies a friend is a child who is running. One problem: turn your head sideways mid-run and you trip. Watch the side, lose the front. So — eyes forward, and run beside again.
Now a friend falls. 同情心 — sympathy. People say do not pity me, as if it looks down. Is it a bad word then? No. 同 means same: same mind. Not from above — sitting beside, becoming the same mind: I fell too. Back on that track: sit down next to the fallen friend, before pulling them up. That is 同.
Old friends have 以心傳心 — mind passed to mind, no words needed. Recap, one card each: 童心 the sandbox mind, 競爭心 running beside, 猜忌心 losing the front by watching the side, 同情心 sitting beside, 以心傳心 understanding without words. All five end in 心. That friend who won today — smile first, even if it stings: it means you are running. A friend is not the one who wins, but the one who runs beside you.
