That endless 'side effects' list on a drug leaflet is frightening. But 副 does not mean 'bad' — it means 'alongside'.

We have been misreading 'side effects'
That endless 'side effects' list on a drug leaflet is frightening. But 副 does not mean 'bad' — it means 'alongside'.
A drug has one intended effect (主作用). It cannot strike only the sore spot — it travels the whole body, so everything alongside is 副作用. English says the same: side effect.
'A drug with no side effects' does not really hold. If it acts at all, something comes alongside. What matters is which ones, and how often — the leaflet says so.
A blood-pressure compound made hair grow — that side effect became a hair-loss drug. A heart compound showed something else in trials, and that became Viagra. The side moved to the centre.
You have seen 副 everywhere: 반장/부반장 class president and vice, 시장/부시장, 사장/부사장, 주석/부주석, 사수/부사수 — the one beside, who stands in when needed.
副 is 'alongside'; English says 'side effect' too. Korean dictionaries have narrowed it to 'undesirable', but the character is neutral. Read the list knowing what it means — and ask a pharmacist if worried.
