금일(今日)은 「오늘」이다. 금요일의 금은 쇠 금(金), 금일의 금은 이제 금(今) — 소리만 같고 글자가 다르다. 학교 알림장의 「금일까지」를 금요일로 읽는 오해는 방송과 신문이 실제로 보도한 사례다. 같은 자리에 명일(明日) 「내일」, 익일(翌日) 「다음 날」도 함께 나온다. 요일 이름이 모두 날 일(日)로 끝난다는 것도 같은 글자에서 나온 일이다. 다만 매일·생일·휴일·평일·일기의 한자 짜임은 이 편에서 카드로 보여 주는 내용이며, 표준국어대사전 원어 칸과의 대조는 아직 끝내지 않았다.

今日 is 이제 금(now) + 날 일(day) — this day, today. The 금 of 금요일 is 쇠 금(metal), a different glyph that only sounds the same. And 금요일 itself ends in 日.
