You failed the exam. You did not get in. What you wanted did not happen. We say 낙심, 낙담, 상심 — they look alike, but the characters differ.
落心 — 落 to fall. The mind drops. The dictionary: 'the heart is hurt because what was hoped for did not come.' Note: what was hoped for. Without hope there is nothing to fall.
落膽 goes further: 落 to fall, but 膽 is gall bladder, not mind. The old view placed courage there — hence 大膽, big-galled, for boldness. 낙담 is that dropping out.
喪心 — 喪 means loss, the same character used for mourning. 'Strength drains and the mind scatters.' 낙심 falls, 낙담 sinks, 상심 loses. The same pain at different depths.
忍耐心 — to bear and endure. Enduring is not pretending it does not hurt; it is knowing it does and staying. And 初心, the mind you began with: the place to return to is not success but the start.
落心 falls, 落膽 sinks deeper, 喪心 loses. But both 낙심 and 낙담 carry 落 — and to fall, you must first have been up there. You hoped, you tried, so you had risen.
