目은 '눈'에서 '조목·제목'(과목·제목)과 '눈길'(목표·주목)으로 쓰인다. 足은 '발'(족구·수족)이자 '넉넉하다'(만족·부족) — 만족을 「발까지 찬다」로 푸는 것은 풀이 중 하나이고, 사전은 足을 '족하다'로 본다. 수족관의 족은 겨레 족(族).
